Spiritual Significance Of  “Rukmini Swayamvar” For Marriage

A sacred book “ Rukmini Swayamvar” is originally in Marathi. It describes the glorious leelas of Shree Krishna. Especially about the marriage between Lord  Shree Krishna and Devi Rukmini.

Sant Eknath wrote "Rukmini Swayamwar", which is comprised of 764 verses. Eknath was a prominent Marathi saint, scholar, and religious poet of the Varkari sampradaya.

The story is about how Shree Krishna carried away Rukmini at the time of her Swayamvar.

Devi Rukmini was a daughter of  Bhishmaka, the king of Vidarbha (Maharashtra, India). She had five brothers named Rukmi, the second Rukmaratha, the third Rukmabahu, the fourth Rukmakasa, and the fifth Rukmamali. Rukmini was the youngest of them. She was very beautiful and one of the true devotees of Lord Narayana. When she heard About Shree Krishna Leelas from Devashree Narad Muni, she fell in love with Krishna and wanted to get married to Krishna. But her elder brother Rukmi was very ambitious and he never liked Shree Krishna. He fixed Devi Rukmini’s marriage with Sishupala.

The worried Rukmini sent a letter to Shree Krishna through Narad Muni. Saying that " Hey lord Krishna, I have surrendered myself on your lotus feet. I know you are very kind. Please come and take me to your world. I have already considered you as my husband now I cannot see anyone else at your place, So please come here and catch hold of my hand so that I may not be touched by Sishupala.”

Immediately Lord Krishna came from Dwaraka along with his elder brother Balarama.  He carried away Devi Rukmini from her Swayamvara.

Rukmini’s brother Rukmi started chasing them. Krishna had a battle against rukmi and shishupala. When Krishna was about to kill Rukmi, Rukmini fell at the feet of Krishna and begged that her brother's life be spared. Krishna, generous as always, agreed, but as punishment, shaved Rukmi's head and let him go free. There was no greater shame for a warrior than a visible sign of defeat.

Lord Krishna and Devi Rukmini came to Dwaraka and got married. Had a great celebration in Dwaraka.

With changing times, many of you may find this famous mythological story very common. But at that time in Dwaparyuga, A bride taking initiative for her marriage, planning about her own kidnapping, and running away with someone whom she has trusted from her heart just by listening to his stories, these acts were certainly not common. She was deeply in love with Shree Krishna, she respected him, she trusted him and waited for him patiently till the last moment, she devoted her entire life to him not just as a wife but as a true devotee. The same way Lord Krishna too came for her with one message all way from Dwaraka. He protected her and gave her a respected place in his heart and life.

Many people say reading or parayan of this “ Rukmini Swayamvar” book can easily solve marriage-related problems. But just reading this book will not create any miracle overnight. We need to understand the significance of this story. A married couple needs mutual respect, love, trust, and support among themselves to make marriage lasting and successful. But with the changing priorities among modern brides and grooms, these important values are getting lost somewhere, resulting in a lot of disturbances in their marital life.

Coming to the Pre-marital matrimonial search, if you are looking for the right life partner and repeatedly you are facing failure in your path, this book can be one of the holistic options to solve your premarital search problems. Before you start looking out for that Mr. Perfect or Miss Perfect, you need to prepare yourself with the qualities that Lord Krishna and Devi Rukmini have expressed in this story.
